A ‘Vaping Revolution’ Leads To Record Breaking Numbers
A record number of people in the UK now regularly vape, after a ‘vaping revolution’ has emerged over the last ten years.
Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) revealed the results of its Smokefree GB report recently, showing 4.3 million Brits are regular vapers, accounting for 8.3 per cent of adults in England, Wales, and Scotland.
This is an increase from 1.7 per cent in 2022 when just 800,000 used e-cigarettes, the Guardian revealed.
Ash’s deputy chief executive Hazel Cheeseman told the publication: “[Vapes] can be lifesaving tools for those struggling to quit.”
The report found that more than half (2.4 million) of the regular vapers are former smokers, showing that people are increasingly using e-cigarettes as a strategy to quit smoking.
Indeed, one-fifth of ex-smokers said vaping helped them give up cigarettes, although 56 per cent having been using e-liquids for over three years.
However, it also revealed that 1.5 million still smoke, and 350,000 have never picked up a cigarette in their lives.
The report showed the 35 per cent of vapers who also used traditional cigarettes said they smoked less than those who did not vape as frequently.
This compounds figures from the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, which recently showed that 20.8 per cent of those who use both vapes and cigarettes stopped the latter within a year.
Young people seem to be big fans of vaping, with 11 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds in the UK admitting they often use e-cigarettes in 2022. This is a massive jump from just last year when only five per cent of this age group said they vaped.
