Scientists Urge WHO To Accept Vaping

One hundred scientists from around the world have demanded that the WHO ends its opposition to vaping and e-cigs to help save the lives of millions of smokers every year.

One hundred scientists from all around the world have demanded that the World Health Organisation (WHO) ends its opposition to vaping and e-cigs to help save the lives of millions of smokers every year.

The Express reports that the scientific experts have all backed a paper written by Clive Baker, a leading anti-tobacco campaigner and former director of anti-smoking campaign group ASH.

Mr Baker believes that up to eight million people a year could be saved, if they switched to vaping instead of harmful tobacco products, and highlighted evidence that vaping is 95 per cent safer than traditional cigarettes, thus greatly reducing the instances of cancer and other smoker-related health problems.

While Mr Baker wants smokers to be encouraged to start vaping as a means to wean them off the habit, the WHO has Hunan aggressive campaign that aims to get vaping and e-cigarettes banned.

The controversial topic is to be discussed at an intergovernmental conference in November, the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (COP9), which will be looking at how to reduce tobacco-related deaths.

The UK government is also being urged to ensure that its policy to encourage vaping as an alternative to smoking is being promoted at the conference.

Mr Batesโ€™ letter states: โ€œFor hundreds of millions of people who struggle to quit smoking or want to continue to use nicotine, these products represent a significant additional pathway to escape from the deadliest ways to use nicotine.โ€

The letter has been backed by 100 specialists in nicotine science, policy and practice from around the world.
