Smoking Ban Will ‘See Vapers Soar’

The number of people who vape will rise dramatically if a national smoking ban is imposed, according to a highly-experienced doctor.

Dr Chaudhary, who has worked for Philip Morris, British American Tobacco and Imperial, told the Express more people could use e-cigarettes if the government is able to achieve its proposed target of being smoke-free by 2030.

He stated: “Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the world that kills thousands of people a year. Banning cigarettes tomorrow would force smokers to use e-cigarettes which will end up saving many, many lives.”

The expert was commenting on Health Secretary Sajid Javid’s aim to make smoking illegal by the end of the decade.

Later this week, an independent review commissioned by Mr Javid, together with former chief executive of children’s charity Barnardo’s Javed Khan, will be published, recommending ways to reduce the number of smokers ahead of this deadline.

These include increasing the legal age of smoking to 21 and imposing more taxes on tobacco companies, reported The Guardian.

It is also thought the review will recommend more efforts from the NHS to encourage smokers to quit, and to swap cigarettes for vapes instead.

Dr Chaudhary stated drastic action is required, otherwise “we will never see the change we require”.

He added that big tobacco companies need to be incentivised into investing in vaping products, such as by having to pay hefty taxes on tobacco products, as “combustible cigarettes are keeping the lights on” for them at the moment.
