Smoking Quitters Push Vaping Numbers Up

One of the most popular things to do when giving up smoking is to turn to e-cigarettes instead, which gives users the nicotine hit without the danger of tobacco inhalation.

One of the most popular things to do when giving up smoking is to turn to e-cigarettes instead, which gives users the nicotine hit without the danger of tobacco inhalation.

According to health records of over 110,000 smokers seen at Barnes-Jewish Hospital between 2018 and 2020, a huge number took up vaping while trying to ditch their traditional cigarettes, Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis revealed.

It stated that the number of vape users actually tripled during this period, with a growing percentage of smokers becoming dual users.

“Instead of quitting, they started vaping while also continuing to smoke traditional cigarettes,” the university revealed.

By the end of the study, 2.3 per cent of quitters were both smoking and vaping, with this proportion having grown throughout the course.

Despite this, moving to electronic cigarettes could be a way to help smokers break their addiction. The results showed that 20.8 per cent of dual users stopped smoking within a year, which is higher than the proportion of traditional cigarette smokers who were successful in breaking their habit (16.8 per cent).

Brendan T Heiden, a surgical resident and cardiothoracic surgery research fellow, noted that smoking-cessation treatment was more beneficial for those who smoked both traditional and electronic cigarettes.

According to official government figures, around 5.5 million people in the UK still smoke, which is the equivalent of 13.5 per cent of the adult population.
