Study Indicates Effectiveness Of Vaping in Smoking Cessation

A recent study has looked into the success of vaping and e-cigarettes as a treatment for those wanting to quit smoking.

It follows the announcement by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) that ‘nicotine-containing e-cigarettes can help people to stop smoking and are similarly effective to other cessation options’, according to Vaping Post.

For the study, participants were recruited by tobacco councillors and followed a smoking cessation treatment for two months. The participants were then followed for seven months after their quit date and asked to complete questionnaires.

The researchers reported that one-third of all the participants achieved smoking abstinence seven months after their quit date, and that e-cigarette users had higher chances of abstaining from smoking at the final session, compared to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The findings are in line with previous studies, and the researchers found that vapes may be more effective than other NRTs in helping smokers kick the habit.

“People who smoke and choose e-cigarettes in the context of smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counsellors show similar if not higher smoking cessation rates compared to those choosing other evidence-based (or no) smoking cessation aids,” they concluded.

Vaping advocates have also welcomed the latest report from Public Health England (PHE), which confirms that vaping is the most commonly used method for quitting smoking.

In a study carried out by researchers at King’s College London, the PHE’s seventh independent report on vaping in England highlighted that:

  • Vaping is the most popular aid (27.2 per cent) used by smokers trying to quit in England in 2020
  • More than 50,000 smokers stopped smoking in 2017 with the aid of vaping
  • 38 per cent of smokers believed that vaping is as harmful as smoking while 15 per cent believed that vaping is more harmful
