Study Shows Vaping Has Harm Reduction Potential
A recent scientific study has suggested that deaths and severe health conditions could be avoided if smokers switch to vaping, according to British American Tobacco (BAT).
Vaping Daily reports that BAT conducted a review of all the scientific literature concerning e-cigarettes and vaping, and also found that public perception of vaping and vaping products have hampered efforts by health authorities to encourage smokers to quit and switch to less harmful, vaping products.
The study looked at over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles that addressed the public’s opinions of the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes, revealing that the general public still considers vaping to be as dangerous as smoking cigarettes, and the misconception has grown over time.
Only a third of adults in the UK and the US are aware that there is scientific evidence that confirms vaping is safer than smoking, and BAT’s researchers concluded that if this knowledge gap widens, more smokers will be discouraged from switching to vaping.
The study summarised that if more people understood the relative safety of vaping products over cigarettes, they could avoid the significant health risks associated with continued smoking.
BAT and its rival Phillip Morris International (PMI) have both invested in the reduction of the impact of its products on consumers and the wider population, and CEO of PMI André Calantzopoulos has stated the company’s intention to end sales of combustible cigarettes with a decade.
The study said that vaping product manufacturers should continue to work with government regulators to ensure that the products are safe and made to the highest standards, and called for international manufacturing standards to be implemented.
The study’s author, Dr David O’Reilly, stressed that it was important for governments to impose more robust safety standards. The current standards only regulate things like labelling and taxation.
